According to Noah Webster’s 1828 dictionary a transformation is the act or operation of changing the form or external appearance. My Turbulence Training transformation is more than a change of the external. Sure, my waist and thighs have gotten leaner. You can see my abs for the first time in years, but I also found an inner change at work, one of heart, determination and commitment. I rediscovered my inner athlete and purposed to show my children, by example, a healthy way to reach my goals.
I have always been athletic, I enjoy sports and working out. In the 80’s I bought Jane Fonda tapes and did leg lifts ad nauseum. These were of course supplemented by playing high school sports which is probably why I never noticed how ineffective my chosen form of fitness really was. In the 90’s I was a college athlete but with little time outside of my studies and practice schedule to add to my workouts. In the late 90’s I subscribed to the light weights, high reps so as not to “get too bulky”. Pregnancies were hard on me.
I gained 70lbs, lost 20lbs, got pregnant again when my first was 6months old, regained the 20lbs, lost 70lbs, hovered at my ideal weight briefly, gained 10lbs, got pregnant and gained 50lbs and lost all 50lbs all in the matter of 4.5 years. I have stuggled with an eating disorder and overcome it. Two years ago I discovered that my body does much better on a whole foods low carb diet. Six months after starting that I discovered I did ot want to be “skinny fat”, I started lifting heavy but absolutely avoided cardio as that was a no no. I looked good for my age but truthfully I wanted to look better.
That brings us up to date. Twelve weeks ago when I started the Turbulence Training contest I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was a little scared to hope for change as it seems that most everything I have done in the past came up short. At my age, I wasn’t sure that I could do better than where I was. Due to my past problems with an eating disorder I was afraid I would become obsessed with the process. So I thought about all the reasons I wanted to participate in the transformation. A few rose to the top. I turned 38 during the contest, I wanted to be in the best shape of my life and become an athlete again. I wanted to decrease my bodyfat percentage, I didn’t care about the weight as much as getting lean. Most importantly I wanted energy for my kids and to be an example to them of living a healthy lifestyle and to encourage them to do the same. I have met all of those goals. I also found I enjoy intermittent fasting once or twice a week. That taught me more about how my mind and emotions contribute to my eating. And finally, I found Turbulence Training to be an awesome way to achieve my goals. I enjoyed my workouts so much that off days were a let down. I looked forward to new personal bests and to pushing the intensity on my intervals just a bit more each time. My friends and family are amazed at how good I look for 38 years old with three kids.
As for myself, I am looking forward to continuing the process. Prior to TT, I was leaning toward just accepting where I was at, we let our gym membership expire and I was going to just work on maintaining as best as I could at home. Now I realize that I can continue to work hard without obsessing. I have a plan with TT. I have a healthy way of eating and I have a way to cut a few pounds if needed with intermittent fasting.
My kids and I are having fun being active on off days. And I don’t see any reason why I
can’t look even better at my next birthday. Here are my final measurements:
Before After
124.5 Wt. 117.9
24.3% bodyfat% per scale 22%
Before After
31” Chest 30”
11” Bicep 10.5”
29” Waist 26”
37.5” widest part of hips 35.5”
18.5” thigh, 7”up patella 17.5”
